MAKHANA GRADE GUIDE

What A+ Grade makhana means

The grade decides whether your makhana turns light and crisp or small and chewy. Here is what A+ Grade means, how it compares to standard grade, how to check quality before you buy, and why the bigger grade costs more.

Quick answer

A+ Grade is our top hand-sorted size class, and it means a bigger, more evenly popped seed. It pops full and even, so it turns crisp instead of chewy. Because grading can vary between sellers, check the grade, real size photos, and how consistent the pieces are in the pack.

What is A+ Grade in makhana?

A+ Grade is a hand-sorting standard used to describe the size and consistency of a popped makhana seed. It works like a grade: the larger and more even the seed, the higher the grade, and the fewer of them a harvest produces. Standard, mixed-size grades are more common and cheaper, while a single large grade is rarer and commands a premium.

Most loose makhana sold at local shops mixes several sizes in the same batch, which is why one handful can hold both big crisp pieces and small chewy ones. Sorting to a single grade is slower and more wasteful, so it is usually only done for premium packs.

Why A+ Grade is the grade worth buying

An A+ Grade seed is at the large end of the range. Three things follow from that size, and together they decide the eating experience:

  • A bigger seed pops full and even, so it never ends up half popped and dense.

  • Hand sorted, not machine mixed means fewer seeds make the cut, so the size and quality stay consistent from pack to pack.

  • One grade only turns light and crisp when roasted, instead of the mixed crunch you get from a batch of different sizes.

A+ Grade vs standard grade

The table below sums up why the grade is worth paying attention to when you compare packs.

How to check makhana quality before buying

You do not need a lab to judge a pack. Run through this quick checklist, whether you are buying online or in a shop:

  1. Size consistency: the pieces should look close to the same size, not a mix of big and tiny.
  2. Broken pieces: a good pack has mostly whole, round seeds, not powder and halves.
  3. Colour: look for a natural ivory white, not a stark bleached white or a dull grey.
  4. Crunch: after a short dry roast it should snap cleanly, not bend or feel soft.
  5. Label and seal: the pack should be sealed, freshness dated, and list only makhana as the ingredient.

Why premium makhana costs more

Two things drive the price of a genuine A+ Grade pack. First, the grade itself: larger seeds are rarer, so more of each harvest is sorted out and the yield per pack is lower. Second, the supply chain: most makhana passes through three to five hands between the Bihar pond and your plate, and each one adds a markup.

At Makau we buy directly from the harvesting families and sort to a single A+ Grade, so the price reflects real size and quality rather than a chain of middlemen or a marketing budget. That is the honest version of premium.
